When you hear “chemical peel,” you might picture red, peeling skin and hiding out at home for a week. That can make the treatment sound a lot more intimidating than it actually is.
Chemical peels come in different types and strengths, and your experience can look very different depending on the peel being used and your individual skin.
At Medley Health + Beauty in Bellingham, I offer PCA Skin professional chemical peels and choose treatments based on what’s actually going on with your skin—not based on how much we can make you peel.
So, What Does a Chemical Peel Actually Do?
A chemical peel uses a professional solution to create controlled exfoliation of the skin.
Peels can be used as part of a treatment plan for concerns like uneven skin tone and texture, discoloration, acne, and visible signs of aging.
One of the things I like about chemical peels is that they give us options. Someone dealing with breakouts may have very different needs than someone who comes in wanting to address sun damage or dull, uneven skin.
That’s why I don’t expect you to know which peel you need before you come in.
Does Your Skin Have to Peel for It to Work?
No—and this is probably the biggest chemical peel myth I hear.
You may experience visible peeling or flaking after your treatment, but you also may not peel dramatically at all.
More peeling does not mean you got a “better” peel.
I know it can be tempting to wait for that dramatic shedding because it feels like proof that something is happening, but visible peeling isn’t the only measure of a treatment.
What Does a Chemical Peel Feel Like?
Your experience will depend on the specific peel being used and your individual skin response.
Your appointment starts with cleansing and preparing the skin before the peel is applied. You may experience sensations such as tingling, warmth, or some discomfort during certain parts of treatment.
I’ll also be checking in with you throughout the process rather than simply putting something on your skin and walking away.
What Happens Afterward?
This is where following your aftercare instructions really matters.
Depending on your treatment and how your skin responds, you may notice some redness, dryness, tightness, sensitivity, flaking, or peeling in the days afterward.
And if you do start peeling, as tempting as it is—don’t pick at it.
Avoid trying to speed things up with scrubs or exfoliants. Be gentle with your skin, follow the skincare instructions you’re given, and be especially mindful about sun protection.
How Much Downtime Should You Plan For?
This varies, which is why I always recommend mentioning upcoming plans before your treatment.
If you have a wedding, vacation, photoshoot, or another important event coming up, tell me. We can talk about timing and what you might realistically expect afterward.
And if the possibility of peeling is the only thing keeping you from trying a chemical peel, ask me about it. You may have more options than you think.
Which Peel Should You Book?
You don’t need to choose one on your own.
Tell me what you’re seeing when you look at your skin. Maybe it’s breakouts, uneven tone, discoloration, texture, or just skin that isn’t looking as fresh as you’d like.
From there, we can talk about whether a chemical peel is appropriate and which PCA Skin peel makes sense for you.
